Alterna has been one of the most buzzed-about haircare brands for years. Remember the height of the Jennifer Aniston hair craze? When everyone was yapping about her super expensive white truffle shampoo? It was Alterna.
Up until a week ago, there was a jar of Alterna Ten Hair Masque sitting in my beauty closet. I think it had made its way in via a gift bag, and I decided to hold on to it until I was experiencing a hair emergency of at least DEFCON-3 level.

So we are, of course, a tad bit behind on our now-impossible goal of reading a book a week, but we have, indeed, finished Out of Africa—it was amazing! Really, we could not recommend it more highly, highly, highly. But we’re a bit stuck on the Seneca, and we have no choice but to move on to Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky—one of those books we’re pretty sure we’re reading about a year behind everybody else. We think we forgot to mention that one of our goals with all this is to read only books written before 1950, just because when we read contemporary fiction, we get all insecure and out of sorts and start wondering why we’re not working on our own books, instead of watching South Park.
Anyhoo, we’re just starting this, but we know it’s going to be amazing. The opening chapter was amazing. We use the word, too often, to describe, say, how much we like English muffins, but we are sure it is deserved here. Even more amazing was one of the appendices, which we jumped ahead and read: It’s the correspondence between the husband and friends of the author, after she was, terribly, taken away from her home in France as a "stateless Jew"—she and her husband were Russian, with French children, and practicing Catholics in any case—and … well, it’s too depressing to get into, really. She’s warned by her editor:

If you frequent more than one beauty blog you’re likely to have noticed a crop of recent posts on Nanette Lepore fragrance (see this one, this one and this one). The original Nanette scent isn’t new, so I’m sensing a well-timed PR push for Valentine’s Day. And it makes sense, because Nanette Lepore is soft, feminine, romantic and flowery…an excellent fit for Cupid’s favorite day.
Unfortunately, it’s also way too sweet for my taste (although to its credit, it does come in a rollerball, which is fab). There’s a violet note that I absolutely love, but the overall effect is a little too sweet for my liking. If you’re into sweet, powdery florals, though…you’re going to love it.

>> Potential fashion crisis in the making: Polaroid will cease to produce its instant photo film by the beginning of next year.
Casting directors who take endless Polaroids of models to shop around to their clients, photographers looking to test the lighting, stylists who Polaroid every complete look during runway show fittings . . . everyone in the fashion industry who kept Polaroid alive for this long needs to pray that someone will take over the technology and keep producing it. That, or stock up now.

We love Bird—it’s the best boutique chainlet in Brooklyn (read: anywhere), an opinion not-at-all biased by the fact that we used to do some of their promotional writing. And sale! It is the only good thing about February.
Above: We think this is one of the most beautiful dresses ever. 3.1 Phillip Lim one-shoulder dress, was $660, now $449

![This Little Piggy [Annals Of Anorexia]](http://citypeoplefashion.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/168661.png)
All the time we think to ourselves, “Why oh why has no one ever invented a pig-shaped doll with human features that magnetically sticks to the fridge and has thighs that expand with a push of its snout to keep me from eating?” Turns out, our dreams came true in 1991, when one Mr. Gregory Nahas filed a patent for such a product (tag line? “When overeating / Touch my nose / Watch my thighs / How big they grow), calling it a “Diet Aid Doll.” Alas, the anorexia-inspiring toy was never brought into production. Which means all we’re left with is this sketch that accompanied the patent application to mock. [Inventor Spot]

So we have this wedding we’re going to in about a month. One of our absolutely favorite cousins is getting married, and we are going. We’re so very excited to go - for a multitude of reasons. It’s in a warm climate, we get to see our family, we get to get dressed up, we get to stay in a hotel (honestly, we think it’s like the biggest treat in the world). We were actually least concerned with what to wear - we have a couple stand-by, nice dresses that double as wedding, cocktail party, and job interview wear all in one. Well, we recently heard that the men in the wedding will be wearing tuxes, the mother of the groom (our aunt) is wearing a gown - and we were surprised. Last we’d heard, the ceremony was going to be very small, and it is, shall we say, not our cousin’s first wedding. But, it is the bride’s first, so it’s apparently a formal affair.
Our stand-by dresses will not do! We were fine with this, and actually in line at Forever 21 to try on a slew of short and/or sequined numbers (none costing more than $19.00) when we got an email - our cousin would now like us to be a part of the wedding! We have never been part of such a thing, except for our own. And this is much, much fancier. We realized that we will need to step up the level of dress, so here are the dresses we’re thinking about now. But still! So much pressure!
