i’m keeping this fairly short, because for me, there really isn’t much to say. cameos are classic, hand-carved agate on a brass link chain give this delightful bracelet heft and substance, without adding a chunky feel.

this tomoko igarashi bracelet is, for me, truly beautiful.

saying that i am completely enamored with this dress would most probably confuse those who know me well. the bright and far-from subtle print would never have been something that i would have been attracted to. the kimono-style, with defining waist - would have me running to the woods - and although these things still ring with unfortunate truth, my insecurities shouldn’t stop you from loving and rocking this kaj ani high collar dress, found here at adele.

27 Dresses

January 27th, 2008 by admin

Ever since I heard about this movie a few months ago, I’ve been waiting in great anticipation to see it. After all, this is probably one of the few chick flicks coming out… since Knocked Up!
27 Dresses
Just the name 27 Dresses is a selling point for me. And this cute poster with mention of “Devil Wears Prada” helps too! 27 Dresses
The actual plot is about how Jane (Katherine Heigl) is a professional bridesmaid, who has willingly donned on some pretty horrible dresses in order to “be there” for her friends on their special day.
27 Dresses
In fact, she has 27 of them. Usually I’m quite envious of people’s overflowing wardrobes in movies (think Clueless), but I think I’ll make an exception in this case…. 27 Dresses
The story revolves around how Jane’s sister, Tess (Malin Akerman) comes into town and falls in love with Jane’s boss George- who Jane happens to be in love with for a loooong time! I thought it was quite amazing how they managed to make Katherine Heigl (whom I always thought looked quite pretty in Grey’s Anatomy) look like the “plain Jane” in this movie compared to Tess.
27 Dresses
During that time, Jane also meets Kevin (James Marsden!) the wedding journalist for the New York Journal- and the chick flick romance begins.
27 Dresses
I’ve loved James Marsden since his appearance in Ally McBeal many years ago (where he sang Frank Sinatra…sigh!) and his recent Prince charming role in Enchanted was not bad either (if a bit dumbed down). But I LOVE LOVE LOVE his look here. While in his other roles, he’d always had that clean, preppy pretty boy look, his role in this movie as a journalist is ruggedly handsome and charming…sigh………… 27 Dresses

Over all I liked the movie. I love weddings. I love chick flick happy endings. And I LOVE LOVE LOVE James Marsden. It was just the light hearted fun movie I was looking for. I know that many reviews have found this movie to be sexist because it portrays getting married as the life goal of women, but personally I think that is just the opinion of the female lead here and everyone is entitled to their own opinions and so its not reflective of a whole gender. What did everyone else think?

Two Different Kinds of Invites…

January 27th, 2008 by admin

I get unreasonably excited whenever I see an air mail sticker because it reminds of those snail mail years of receiving letters on Sanrio stationary adorned with gummy stickers and written with smelly pens from people in Hong Kong. Sadly, all I get these days are virtual drinks and kisses via Facebook. Ok, enough of the old woman in me lamenting away. I got especially excited when I saw that this piece of post was from Daydream Nation, one of the very few Hong Kong labels that shows in London and whose shows (SS08, AW07) I look forward to very much indeed. Their illustrated fabric invite for their AW08-8 show ‘Good Night Deer’ has me intrigued in every way possible because going from past experiences, I haven’t a clue what to expect.

Move Over Mary Lou [Burning The Scale]

January 27th, 2008 by admin

As I’ve mentioned before, I am a former gymnast. Growing up, I didn’t really work out, I just went to gymnastics. Four hours a day, six days a week of intensive training is work out enough. But I really enjoyed it. I felt about gymnastics the way Dexie felt about her dancing. It was the one place I could be me. I enjoyed pushing myself to the point of physical exhaustion. What can I say I’m a masochist. Whenever I feel like I need a little tone up , I draw from this experience. We would do a half hour cool down everyday and damn it if the cool down wasn’t just as punishing as the workout itself. One of my favorites was crunch, pike, straddle sit ups. It works your hips, abs, inner thighs, outer thighs, glutes and strengthens your lower back. Is there anything this exercise won’t do? Well it won’t do your laundry but you won’t care because you will have rock hard abs.

Start by laying on your back and raising your head, neck and feet six inches off of the ground. Curl your body into a crunch and then extend back to your starting position without lowering your head or legs. Then move into a pike position. It’s like a jackknife with your legs straight, toes pointed and the goal is to touch your fingers to your toes. Return to your starting position remembering not to lower your position. Go into your straddle position, trying to reach your arms as far forward as possible. Point your toes and keep your posture. After completing the straddle-up you can lower your head and legs and then begin again. These should be done quickly, as in you should be moving from one position to another without pause. They are killer. I would start with the goal of doing three sets of ten every day. Once you decide to start you will either not be able to do them at all or only be able to do a few to begin with. I find they are the best quick solution to firming up that mid-section. I mean how many gymnasts do you see with love handles…um yeah thought so. Only try if your are serious about toning, otherwise you will just give yourself a hernia. I have done them when I wasn’t ready and it’s not pretty. I attempted them to try to induce labor and had my son 24 hours later so, be warned. For extra toning, try some reverse sit-ups, on your stomach to tone your back. If you are up for those too right our of the box then you are a rockstar and you need to be at the damn Olympics. Happy sweating.

Jacob Have I Loved: Oh, Who Am I Kidding, I Reread This Book Once a Week [Fine Lines]

Jacob Have I Loved: Oh, Who Am I Kidding, I Reread This Book Once a Week [Fine Lines]

Welcome to ‘Fine Lines’, the Friday feature in which we give a sentimental, sometimes-critical, far more wrinkled look at the children’s and YA books we loved in our youth. This week, writer/reviewer/blogger Lizzie Skurnick rereads Katherine Paterson’s 1980 novel ‘Jacob Have I Loved’, the story of a young girl, Sara Louise, whom nobody likes as much as her twin sister.

As soon as the snow melts, I will go to Rass and fetch my mother. At Crisfield I’ll board the ferry, climbing down into the cabin where the women always ride, but after forty minutes of sitting on the hard cabin bench, I’ll stand up to peer out of the high forward windows, straining for the first site of my island.
