BS Hearts: Gold Shoes

We have to confess. We have always had a shoe problem. We’ve been cursed with wide-ish feet and high arches, and finding comfortable shoes is nearly impossible. We realized this weekend that we have no normal/weekend shoes. We were shopping with our wonderful, lovely mom and we were definitely wearing gold ballet flats with jeans. We don’t wear sneakers much, and sometimes boots are just too much trouble. So, our ‘normal’, every day shoes are these gold ballet flats. We must note that we’ve been doing this far longer than we’ve known who Amy Winehouse is; we apparently just have similar taste in shoes.

However, we think that we would like to wear gold shoes all the time. It’s fairly neutral, and we haven’t yet had an instance where we’ve felt out of place for wearing them. And who knew there were gold shoes of all types? Here are our favorites!

Above, the gold ballet flats in question. They’re from Target, they’re dirt cheap, and they’re comfortable. We may actually order 2 more pair as soon as we post this.

Xhiliration Sable Gold Ballet Flats, $10.99

We saw these at (gasp!) Easy Spirit this weekend, and we actually love them. The leather felt REALLY soft, they’re not too pointy, and the heel is a nice height. We’re not entirely sure about gold heels, but we think we love them. And since they’re Easy Spirit, we’re willing to bet they’re going to be comfortable.  They were on sale in the store, though.

Easy Spirit Input, $79

We like that these are almost like real shoes. And plus, sometimes fabric ballet flats can be a bit rough. Here, same general shape, and leather! Woo!

BC Lemon Tarts, $55.95

Tees drawn by the Wee ones

I’m not about to get all sanctimonious to get brownie points for featuring charitable fashion-related news.  However, Marni’s charitable idea is an endearingly cute one that simultaneously solves the problem of what to wear with my stash of Muji/Uniqlo drab office skirts that I accumulated during my uni temping days and also what to buy as last minute X’mas gifts for a few people.

Marni’s association with printed art on clothes is taken down to basics by presenting childrens’ self-portraits from all around the world.  Children from Columbia, Tibet, India, Guatamala and Brazil were asked to doodle their self-portraits and six of the drawings have been selected to be printed on men’s and women’s t-shirts available on the Marni Virtual Store.

I remember doing this self-portrait excercise, first starting off with the classic childish errors of ‘all heads are shaped like egg’, teensy tiny eyes, HUGE lips and other sorts of disproportions.  Marni apparently received 7,000 of these self-portraits and though the children were asked to draw what they see in a mirror, some had the imagination to depict themselves as what they wanted to be (firefighters, astronauts etc).  To be ickle again and go mad with crayloas and felt tips….

The main thing is though (and this is where I go slightly preachy!), the proceeds of the T-shirt sales will be distributed between the schools who participated in the initiative.  Actually, the other ‘main’ thing is that the t-shirts are not going to break the bank at £60 a pop and like I said, solves my very two very selfish/uncharitable problems.  If you are lucky enough to shop at Marni regularly then you’ll also see an ickle face peering up at you as the remaining drawings have been reproduced on the stores’ carrier bags.

P.S. I’m not actually a ‘Bah humbug’ sort of person.  I’m just wary of various ways of cashing in hidden under the guise of charity.  This thankfully isn’t one of them.

Make Lemonade Out of Lemons [Pretty by Nature]

During the spring and summer months, regular pedicures are a must. You can get them done professionally or you can do them yourself but you just can’t leave the house in sandals without one. That’s not just my opinion, that’s fact…don’t do it. The only thing worse is wearing those clear stripper heels with your toes hanging over the front. So after many months of wearing lovely reds and pinks my nails get a little yellow. I don’t use color on my nails in the winter because, well I’m lazy. So I like to winterize them by soaking them in lemon juice. It will take out all the yellow and make your nails look clean and healthy. Soak them for about five minutes in the lemon juice. I follow it up with a warm soapy water soak. Then I exfolitate and slather in a nice thick lotion. There you are, all ready for winter.

Get Party-Ready with These TeenStyle Tips [Teen Style Lounge]

Check your calendars, dear readers. ‘Tis the season for holiday shindigs, New Year’s Eve soirees and winter formals. Sure, the parties themselves are plenty fun, but the best part is getting dressed up for them, right?

So what’s hot right now? Take a look:

  • Metallics still reign supreme, along with the quintessential LBD (little black dress) and fiery red frocks. Flowy styles are comfortable and forgiving, all while providing that really cool swirling skirt effect while you’re breaking it down on the dance floor.
  • Heels are definitely the way to go for any dressy occasion, but be sure to either wear boots while trudging through the snow, or perfect your death grip on your sweetie. Maybe the latter is more preferable, eh? ;)
  • Hair looks party-ready in a half up-do (that’s just the sides and top pinned up, with the rest flowing down). Tap into your adventurous side and sport a hair ornament, such as the cool flower below, or go for all-over curls or waves.
  • Clutches should be your handbag go-to and large and funky jewelry can pump up your look in a hurry.
  • Above all else, have fun and try something unique to you. :)

With those tips in mind, here are just a few of the goodies I found at Alloy, one of my fave sites out there.

Quite possibly my favorite LBD of the season!

These are close runners-up to the LBD!

Try these great accessories!

Just What The World Needs: ‘Sex And The City’ Panties [Rag Trade]

  • Oh, Christ. There is going to be a Sex and the City lingerie line by Cosabella as a tie-in with the movie. Predictably, there will be four mini-lines, named after each of the four main characters on the show, meaning the “Samantha” line will be for the transgendered? Excellent. [WWD, 1st item]
  • How did we not know that Nina Ricci designer Olivier Theyskens once collaborated with the Smashing Pumpkins? [Vogue UK]
  • “I collect vintage jewelry and I’m lucky enough to be married to a rich man who can buy it for me.” So says Iman. Um, so like, all that modeling you’ve been doing over the past few decades has been pro bono? How nice. [WWD, sub req’d]
  • Mark your Chanukadvent calendars! Isaac Mizrahi is appearing on Martha Stewart’s show on Dec. 18! We can’t wait to see those two queens frost cookies together. [Fashion Week Daily]

  • Model Jessica White is to become one of the new faces of Maybelline cosmetics. And she’s black! [Sassybella]
  • Designer shoe brand Patrick Cox is now officially up for sale. We assume this is because we haven’t heard anyone talk about Patrick Cox since the late ’90’s. [Vogue UK]
  • The Proenza Schouler boys are taking the time slot vacated by Marc Jacobs for the Fall/Winter 2008 shows during New York Fashion Week in February. [Fashion Week Daily]
  • God, we love a good Anya Hindmarch tongue-in-cheek knock-off. [Sassybella]

With Great Breast Size Comes Great Responsibility [Breast Intentions]

In an essay from today’s Salon, staffer Sarah Hepola laments the tyranny of her enormous ta tas, a size which she calls “34 ridiculous”. “I am embarrassed by my knockers,” Hepola writes. “And the fact that something I am embarrassed about is the first thing people notice about me? Well, that kinda sucks. I feel like I could save a baby from a burning building, I could cure cancer with glitter alone, and I would still be referred to as ‘Sarah, you know, the short one with the big tits.’”

Sadly, Hepola is so terrified to go bra shopping that she puts it off for years. And although her trips to NYC bra meccas Town Shop and Orchard Corset were successful in that she found bras that fit, they didn’t exactly make her feel like a sex goddess — most of the bras looked like they could be used to “parachute out of a plane.”

Hepola also wonders if her self-loathing is cultural as she “grew up in an all-white town full of skinny, flat-chested white girls with straight blond hair, girls who were praying (literally praying) for their periods in seventh grade while I was crying over my frizzy hair and hiding my sanitary napkins at sleepovers.”

Though her bras might not be pretty, Hepola can take solace in the fact that new technology is being designed to make her boulder holders more supportive. Scientists have developed an “intelligent fabric,” which, according to the Telegraph, uses sensors to test the movement of breasts during exercise. This study of breasts in motion will hopefully lead to improvements in bra construction, as big breasted women are currently “at risk of long-term injury because much of the support is given by the straps that bear down on their shoulders.”

Maybe once the physical weight of her breasts is off her shoulders, the mental weight of Sarah’s breasts will dissipate? For her sake, we hope so.
