The Envelope Please… [Grammy Time]

The Grammy nominations are in, and Amy Winehouse and Kanye West have the most nods. Amy is up for 6 awards, including album of the year, song of the year, record of the year and best new artist. Kanye was nominated 8 times. The ceremony will be in L.A. on February 10. Wouldn’t it be great if Amy could get it together, perform and win? [People]

I’m taking the rest of the week off to go to San Francisco, but I promise I’m going to come back with new designers and pretty things to show you.

While I’m gone I’ve scheduled a few posts and I might pop in here and there, but posting will be lighter than usual.

Super Skinny Me: The Race To Size Zero [Burning The Scale]

I just saw a documentary on BBC America called “Super Skinny Me: The Race To Size Zero,” the first show in a series about body image. In the documentary, two healthy female journalists (BMI’s around 22 and 21 respectively) go on crash diets made popular by celebrities to lose as much weight as possible in a 5-week period. The goal? To fit into a UK size six (a US size 0).

In my recap of the show, I’ll focus on one female journalist, Kate Spicer.
Kate went from being relatively healthy about food and weight to developing bulimic behaviors by the end of the documentary.

Week 1: - Kate tries the lemonade diet - 3 lemonades a day consisting of lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. Although she’s not able to stick completely with it after day three (she eats nuts and raisins) she still loses 7 pounds.

Week 2 - Kate goes to a detox center, where she has 3 fruit and vegetable-filled jiuces a day and two colonics a week. At her next weigh-in she only loses 5 pounds and, clearly disappointed, says “it’s a good effort.” However, by the end of the week her total loss is 7 pounds.

Week 3 - Kate tries the “raw food diet” - 1200 calories a day of only raw food. Two days in she tries on some pants and comments on the “air between her legs.” Gleefully she says, “i’m going to get skinny!” She’s working out with a trainer and asks him to take her to as low body fat as possible - in her words, “nearly dead.” She loses three pounds that week.

Week 4 - Halfway through the week, Kate eats everything in her house in one morning. She ends up gaining three pounds after the binges, bringing her total to 14 pounds.

Week 5 - Kate sees a psychiatrist because of her warped eating patterns, including binging and laxative abuse. he tellls her if she continues on this way, she could become bulimic. She’s not happy with the way it went. She says, “Next time I see a psychiatrist, I’ll lie to him.”

Two weeks after the experiment, both women had gained a significant amount of weight back. Both were glad they could eat normally once again, although Kate had a harder time with it - when she was weighed, she asked not to see the number in order not to upset her. However, she says she feels “reborn.”

Overall, I thought Kate’s performance was fake and it seemed to me like she had read up on eating disorders before she started the documentary. She knew all the right things to say to the doctors, like “Any amount of food seems like too much.” Her barely veiled glee at becoming so skinny was quite obvious, and she put on this “mock serious” face in front of the doctors. I actually found myself hoping she would put all the weight back on!

Did you see this documentary? Let me know in the comments!

“What Are You Going To Do With Your Life?” Mr. Big Asked. Replied The Prophet Carrie: “I’m Going To Become Famous.” [The Bushnell Administration]

A few weeks ago regurgitated Sex & The City columns stopped appearing in the New York Observer, barring us from continuing what had become a weekly ritual of seriously brooding over the time-worn lessons told through its enduring characters. We really really missed that ritual, (not), so it’s good (not) that today Sex & The City has taken upon itself to return to the pink paper, with a little story on this one time Carrie and Mr. Big broke up. See, Mr. Big wouldn’t let Carrie talk about their relationship or listen to his messages or pick up the phone when he was in the house, but she was a flighty and insecure and emotionally infantile codependent young woman with no real direction (Sample exchange: “”What are you going to do with your life?” he’d ask. “I’m going to become famous.”) so she distracted herself with cocaine and dancing around to disco music. And this is the part where you get to experience the true genius of Candace Bushnell’s writing, because this is how it ends:

“That is so sad. You won’t like it when you get there.”

“Get off our planet.”

Then he’d go and smoke a cigar and sulk, or go to the store again with Mr. Marvelous.

In the middle of July:

“Is there somebody else?”

“This is not about anyone else. This is about us.”

“That’s not answering the question.”

“This is about us.”

“It’s a yes or no question. Is there somebody else?”

“No.”

“Liar. You’ve been coached, haven’t you?”

“What are you talking about?”

“Someone’s been coaching you on what to say.”

“This is about us. Not about anyone else.”

“See? There you go again.”

“Why do you have to make this harder?”

“I’m not making it harder. I have to get a cigarette.”

“I have to go to sleep. Why won’t you let me sleep?”

“You don’t deserve to sleep.”

“I haven’t done anything wrong.”

“You haven’t done anything right, either. I want to get to the bottom of this coaching business.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Someone’s been telling you what to say. It’s an old shrink trick. When you’re in a difficult situation, you keep repeating the same phrase over and over again. That way, you can’t have a conversation.”

One hour later:

“What are you doing? Who are you seeing? What time are you getting home?”

“Early. I’m getting home early.”

“You’re out of control.”

“I am not. I’m home at 11.”

“Don’t lie to me.”

“Don’t lie to me.”

“I could have you followed. How do you know that I’m not already having you followed? I’m rich enough to have you followed.”

This was several weeks after Carrie had begged to be taken to a mental institution.

Oh god, and you can just feel her begging, can’t you? What is this madness? What’s going on? Are people actually talking or are these voices in Carrie’s head? Or are they voices in your head? Because, like, how high would you have to be to actually print this shit in a newspaper?

And Carrie keeps repeating to herself, “Thank you for making Mr. Big a nicer guy,” as if she totally knows her story is going to be adapted into a colossal television franchise in which Mr. Big will be played as a charmingly sentimental, if stubbornly emotionally unavailable, man-about town who eventually comes to his senses and makes way for happily ever after.

Which brings us to the moral of the story: anyone who lives her real life as if she is a character in Sex & The City should be institutionalized. Well, duh! But still.

Goodbye, Mr. Big [New York Observer]

A Holiday Notice: What We Can Be Giving To You

Dear Friends of Bunnyshop,

So not like you have 30 million things to do or something—is it us, or December actually so busy that it can’t, also, be the most-fun month of the year?—but we are taking the long view here at Bunnyshop these days, and looking to 2008 as the time when we really bust this shit up. So to speak.

So we’re asking you this: If you have anything about BS (besides our ridiculous initials, which you think we would have been more concerned about when we named ourselves) you especially like, or especially don’t, we would really love to hear. More contests? More prizes? More discounts? More store listings? More interviews with designers? The return of our erstwhile stylist, for asking? Er, so we are actually planning on doing all of those things, but we’d really love to hear what you’d like from us, if anything. Think of it as your Christmas present to us, because nothing makes us happier than knowing what you want. Or diamonds. Etc.

Holiday XOs,
BS + LB
