![Is There Such A Thing As Too Clean? [Dirty Talk]](http://citypeoplefashion.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/89134.jpg)
Are you one of those people with a little bottle of hand sanitizer on your desk? Did you know that most people didn’t use soap to bathe themselves until the late 19th century? Katherine Ashenburg’s new book, The Dirt On Clean: An Unsanitized History, is a history of cleanliness. Salon has an interview with Ashenburg, and if you’re a germaphobe, prepare to be grossed out. In Ancient Rome, a man would oil his body, rub in with dust, and then go out in the playing field and work up a sweat. Then he’d pay someone to scrape off the sweat and dirt, and soak… in the public bath. In the early days of Christianity, Ashenburg says, “Cleanliness was kind of a luxury, like food, drink and sex, because cleanliness was comfortable and attractive. The holier you were — and this really applied to monks and hermits and saints — the less you would wash. And the more you smelled, the closer to God people thought you were.” Buddhists and Muslims thought Christians were filthy, “and they were right.”
When the great plagues came, the Black Death, in the 14th century, the king of France asked the medical faculty at the Sorbonne in Paris, “What is causing this hideous plague that is killing one out of every three Europeans, and what can we do to prevent it?” And the doctor said the people who were at risk for getting the plague had opened their pores in warm or hot water, in the baths, and they were much more susceptible. So in France and England and most European countries, for about five centuries, people really believed that it was very, very dangerous to get in water.

Now that I finally completed my interview with Michael DeVellis I can now move onto my interview with Pink Beauty creator April Jacob. It’s over a week late but it’s better late then never so lets move on! After my fabulous 5 days of Pink Beauty, I thought it would be appropriate to end it with an interview to get the goods on the creator of this amazing makeup line. After a few emails back and forth with each other, I could already tell the interview would be easy going - like two girlfriends chatting about their favourite things: makeup!
My interview with April took place November 22nd at 3 pm. We were supposed to meet in person at a Starbucks downtown but due to a surprisingly icy few centimeters of snow we decided to do a phone interview instead. Plus, we both agreed it was in her best interest to stay away from icy sidewalks especially being 8 months pregnant (that’s right - her and her hubby are expecting their first baby)! Having been there and done that, I totally understood.

![Weekly Igigi Shopping Spree [Dapper Diva]](http://citypeoplefashion.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/88937.jpg)
Three reasons to pick out a wrap shirt for your next new top:
- It makes your waist look smaller. Honestly, if there’s a universal plus-size wish, this would probably be it!
- Your bust looks bigger in comparison. Perkier, too: with a dipped neckline and fabulous supportwear, everything’s exactly where it belongs.
- The wrap waist adds elegance to jeans. I’m constantly fighting to remain in my comfy jeans, and a shirt that steps things up really helps.
Get a peek of this silk dupioni blouse from Igigi.

For something more trendy and fun this season (even though they will be dated after a season and will probably not quite as versatile), here are a few suggestions:
Bold Colors: Adds instant oomph! This electric blue (right) is especially hot this season! (Both: Anthropologie)
Plaid: Yes, plaid is still hot. Plus, it fits right into the Christmas mood! Here we have the more classic cut crop by J Crew (left) and a more edgy crop by LAMB (right). I especially like the wide plaid on the J Crew jacket.
More Plaid: For something a little bit more subtle, versatile and less festive I am loving these two plaid crops from Vince (left) and Marc by Marc Jacobs (right).
Patent: Well they are everywhere for shoes, so why not for cropped jackets? Yes, it may look like a raincoat, but styled by this way by Robert Rodriguez (left), its a very chic raincoat. And I just thought I’d throw in this crop by Ella Moss (right) even though its not patent just because I think the design looks so smart, simple and CUTE!
Metallic: The perfect cover over your party outfit! I LOVE these two by Walter (left) and Express (right). The color and print is subtle and versatile, but the material gives it an extra shine that lends it a more night-time feel.

![Mormon Former Hamptons Editor Bares Soul To Vogue [Dogma]](http://citypeoplefashion.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/88556.jpg)
“I feel like a bad Mormon,” Kristina Stewart Ward begins her first -person essay in this month’s Vogue. See, she just hired a nanny. Mormons don’t have nannies! But she is not just any Mormon; she’s a former editor at Hamptons magazine! And most of her Upper East Side friends “average one nanny per child (no really: one child, one nanny; two children, two nannies, and so on).” How many children does Kristina have? One. She’s pregnant with another, though! And so it goes. For a few thousand words. Kristina is Mormon, and a ridiculous socialite. Out in the town, they used to call her “No sex and the City.” Does she struggle with all the materialism/consumerism/greed/superficiality/vanity of the fashion industry? Nah. Does she struggle with her faith? Nah on that too!
While we are very much a Christian religion (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints is Mormonism’s official name), we don’t believe that God stopped speaking to man after the last page of the New Testament. It’s a lot for a young person to swallow, but I accepted it…Some Christians feel about the Book of Mormon roughly what the Jewish community feels about the New Testament.
