vintage plaid bag [Indie Style File]

This plaid bag from Sugar Toatigami is described as vintage and I think that means that it’s crafted from vintage fabric, a great process that I am glad more designers are using. ($32)
I’ve seen crafted from vintage fabric vests and more at Urban Outfitters and tons of similar looks at etsy and other indie shopping meccas. I hope it’s a trend that continues.

How Come Women Don’t Read Magazines On The Internet? [The Future]
You may be aware that Conde Nast is the big publishing company responsible for most of our very most treasured women’s magazines - - Vogue, Teen Vogue, Glamour, Allure, Self, W, etc. etc. — and that those very women’s magazines, thanks to their huge circulations and all the companies with revolutionary new anti-aging serums and logo-purses they want to tell women about, are the proverbial “cash cows” of the magazine business. But a story in the Wall Street Journal reveals those same magazines are not the cash cows of Conde Nast’s internet business — farrr from it! The company’s top two magazine websites are Wired and Portfolio — and Portfolio just launched! — with Brides, Self and Vogue “online home” Style.com trailing in the distance with well under a million monthly unique visitors apiece. So what’s the problem? Why can’t they get a small fraction of their alleged readers to visit their websites once a month? Don’t women read the internet? And even if they don’t, isn’t the internet the future? By which I mean, isn’t the internet the present? Actually not! Says CondeNet CEO Sarah Chubb to the Wall Street Journal of all those magazine websites:
Their main purpose is a consumer-marketing purpose, a connection for the consumer to the brand. The reason for those sites first and foremost is renewing and selling subscriptions.
Ohhhhh, so they’re not trying to make money by themselves, they’re just there to remind you to kill more trees, then. See, they have this new strategy where they’re starting blogs aimed directly at women, and the blogs are branded separately from the magazines, like this new website they’re running focused on weight loss called ElasticWaist. ElasticWaist started in May, and already they’ve received some attention for using the F-word a lot, and since I didn’t even have to venture out to the newsstands to buy it I checked it out on my own just now and…
Um.
Hey guys? Thank you. For reading, for commenting, for paying my rent, for tolerating my F-words. That’s all.

unique handmade rings [Her Accessories]
I was browsing on etsy recently and this unusual ring popped up on my screen:

It’s a handmade titanium band with a tension set cubic zirconia - I love the color!
I started browsing around Rob & Lean’s shop and discovered more goodies like this titanium & cocobolo ring (cocobolo is a hardwood from Central America) set with 5, 2mm diamonds:

Or if you don’t want to go for a wooden ring, how about a ring from the same material as your countertop?

Aluminum & blue corian ring, $40 (+ shipping)

Reader Mail: The OTK Gossip Girl Dilemma

In today’s Reader Mail:
Hi BS,
I am a 20-something creative career girl in love with over the knee socks (I claim it comes from too much Gossip Girl viewing). Is there a work-appropriate way to wear OTK’s without look too school-girly? My office work attire is creative/pretty much anything goes, but I don’t want to look too young or un-professional.
Thanks!
Sarah
Oh, the knee sock. We remember the last time we wore knee socks, and the way our friend B. told us not to. To this day, we’re not entirely sure why, but the fact that he did put us off them forever. We remember that same night our friend K. told us he liked them—
Okay. So the funny thing is that while we were typing this, our friend B. called, and we finally asked him, after six years, if he told us to stop wearing knee socks because they made our knees look fat, which has long been our assumption. He just said we were being stupid, and in fact, rather than fat, they made us look “slutty.” That, for some reason, doesn’t bother us one bit.
This is all sort of morally cloudy for us. In any case, as far as work appropriate goes, we are the last people on the fucking planet to ask, as we’ve gone on record as backing rompers as suitable office party wear. Last week we had to attend an exceptionally business-y business function, which meant buying a dress we could not afford, and we were so depressed about buying a dress for this function, which means buying a dress we would never have picked out independently, that we started crying in Topshop and sent off all these angry texts about how we hate wearing pants, which in that case was code for any sort of clothing one would wear to a business function rather than, say, a party which encouraged the wearing of things with sequins.
Anyway: We are pro, pro, pro OTK knee socks. We much prefer them in the image above, especially next to the shorts and colored tights. (We love colored tights, and we love shorts, but somehow not together.) But as for work appropriate: We leave that to everyone else? We’re thinking it obviously depends on the work vibe at your office, and we can say with confidence that we would wear them tomorrow if we were still working at the fashion magazine we used to work at, because everyone there just wore what they felt like, and because no one seemed to mind too much if they got fired, which basically no one ever did. But a job you like? We leave it to everyone else to comment. We’re totally interested in the answer, by the way.
Our favorite OTKs:

Topshop over-knee socks, about $14
And then the super-luxe ones. We’ve been looking, ineffectually, for these at a US online boutique, but we’re still at it:

Wolford overknees, $22

MAX Factor Vivid Impact Highlighting Mascara [Makeup Minute]
Have you seen this new product from Max Factor called Vivid Impact Highlighting Mascara? It’s a new double ended mascara that highlights lashes and draws closer attention to the eyes.

Here’s some makeup tips on using it:
Application:
· Step One: Apply the basecoat from the very base of the top lashes to the tip, working the wand outwards.
· Step Two: Wait for the basecoat to dry (Note: if you don’t wait for it to dry the highlighting top coat won’t show up as vivid and will blend with the basecoat as opposed to highlighting lashes)
· Step Three A: Apply the top coat on the very tips of the top lashes and on the bottom lashes to create a highlighted look with a shot of color.
· Step Three B: Apply a few coats of top coat from base to tip on lower and upper lashes for a lot of color
· Step Three C: Apply topcoat on lower lashes only to create a multi-dimensional lash look.

Wearability:
· For green or hazel eyes – try Burning Bordeux shade to make the color of eyes pop
· For blue eyes – Try 24 Karat Brown to make Blue eyes pop and add a light, gold tint to lashes (need to emphasizes gold lightens lashes)
· For brown eyes- All shades work, especially the black and pink combo to make eyes pop
· For all – The most versatile is the black/silver combination when applied correctly above
This mascara is available at WalMart. Have you tried it?

MILFs [Baby Blabber]
Pregnancy: Now with more unrealistic expectations! Maxim has just posted a slide show of the “9 Hottest Pregnant Women Ever.” (Sample text on Heidi Klum: “She was making maternity clothes look like Victoria´s Secret outfits…with crotch pads.”) In somewhat related news, Christina Aguliera, who is near the top of Maxim’s gross list, has posed nude for the January issue of Marie Claire, looking vaguely demented in the face. FINALLY - My Interview With Michael DeVellis of The Powder Group!

Michael DeVellis Interview
I know this is now 2 weeks + late and I apologize immensely!! It’s my fault for thinking that it would be easy to edit it in an audio program (Logic Pro for those of you that are familiar or are AV nerds! lol). I finally was able to work out the kinks (with the help of my hubby) and finished the final edit. I thought you guys would appreciate hearing Michael DeVellis, founder of The Powder Group, speak than me translating it in a long blog especially since he’s just so interesting to listen to. I interviewed him at The Canadian Makeup Show the weekend of November 10 and 11. His interview is full of background info of how the makeup scene was 10 years ago and where it is now and how The Powder Group has helped shape the makeup artist community.
So, just to rant a little more about my editing project, I was disappointed to find out that part of my interview was lost because I think my recorder ran out of space! I thought I had been recording but I was not even though what did get recorded was 52 minutes long! Can you imagine how long it actually was?? I’m really bummed about that. But what I did manage to capture was still full of insightful information and inspiration! You’ll have to excuse my girly giggles and a lot of “yahs”. I kind of forgot I was interviewing him and felt like we were just casually chatting. He’s just so intriguing to listen to. I hope you enjoy listening to the interview as much as I enjoyed interviewing him. I saw Michael again at Industry Cosmetics this past Sunday for Billy B.’s seminar. I can’t wait to post about the awesome makeup tips Billy gave! So stay tuned for that as well! Thank you Michael for the amazing interview and sorry for the lateness!

Converse Sequined Slip-On Sneakers [ShoeBlitz - Shoe Fashions]
If you are looking for a cute casual shoe this holiday season, consider this sequined sneaker from Converse.
This sneaker will give you a little glitz, even if you wear it at the most casual occasion.
This shoe is a grey Converse low-top slip-on embellished with silver sequins on the sides and tongue area. It’s available exclusively at Neiman Marcus for $140.
The rubber sole features a beautiful black butterfly print, which is nice, but I’ve never understood why anyone cares what’s on the bottom of their shoe.
