Mineral Makeup Review : MAD Liquid Mineral Foundation

Mineral makeup usually comes in loose powder form. A few companies have delved into making pressed powders and liquid foundation for those people turned off by messy loose pigments. MAD Minerals is one of those making liquid mineral foundation.

In a recent purchase from MAD, I got myself a sample bottle in 03-W since I am medium-warm toned. Application was easy just by using my fingers. The finish was sheer to medium but can be made heavier by adding a few more layers if needed. The shade I chose looked a bit light initially but it blended in with my skin tone after awhile. A few minutes after application, I felt sweat forming on my forehead (the weather here is cool at the moment). Since I’ve been used to wearing loose powder forms, the liquid foundation felt heavy for me. It was like I had on a “mask” so that was probably one reason I was sweating. The look however, was smooth and flawless and that’s what I liked about it. It did last the day on me and the mask-like feel wore off. Moreover, I was hoping to get the foundation’s claims of the following properties: anti-aging, healing, antioxidant, collagen renewal, hydration, protection from environmental damage and diminished lines/wrinkles. With regular use I’m sure that can be achieved.

For ladies who are used to the feel of liquid foundation, this one’s for you. I, however, would stick with my trusty loose powders for now.

**For all skin types

**Ingredients: Organic Aloe, Organic Jojoba, Titanium dioxide, Emulsifying wax, Iron oxide, Reviving Vitamin E, Phenoxyethanol (paraben free), Mica, Zinc oxide, DMAE, Stearic acid, Meadowfoam Oil, Carrot Oil, MSM, Mannan, Rosemary extract, Neem, Tetrasodium EDTA, Citric Acid

Book Report: Teenage Girls Are Seeing Red [Teen Scene]

Last night, there was a reading and party for Red, a collection of essays by teenage girls. So what exactly is going on with teenage girls today? They’re pissed! Basically nothing’s changed, ’cause we were some angst-y ass teens. One girl read her essay on dealing with the maintenance of her Jewish hair. Another read about how she got into cutting. But our favorite was the girl who read last. (In the photo gallery she’s the blonde wearing an orange turtleneck tunic.) She was very passionate in speaking out to her “sisters” — she memorized her chapter, rather than reading it out of the book — talking about international politics, rape in Sudan, the importance of being extraordinary and believing in yourself. She was 13. I went up to her after the reading was over and asked her what her deal was. She’s an actress, who is home-schooled. I asked her if she would consider herself a feminist and she said, “No, I just want to help out women.” Gallery below.

A bit of French, a bit of Marangoni for the night

I’m busy in the most hellish of ways these days but Saturday will see hairdressers showcasing fashion and art in East London in a weird but hopefully wicked amalgamated event, that I’m definitely hopping along to.  Hair and Jerome. a decadent and avant garde hairdressers in Spitalfields is collaborating with artist Elie Menard for this variety event to raise money for Association Pas Seuls, which helps those that are living with a disability.

Along with the art, the extravagant airs of Hair & Jerome (I’m seriously contemplating one of the do’s below from H&J’s avant garde collection…), designers Cross & Spot and Ivana K will also be showing their SS08 collection as part of the event.

I’m looking forward to discovering two new designers who I hadn’t previously heard of which is a shame seeing as their background and of course their collections are highly impressive.  Cross & Spot is a menswear label, designed by Sheila Dass who has done pattern cutting for the likes of Alexander McQueen and Michiko Koshino and Massimo Casagrande who worked at Versace for four years but is now Head of Fashion at the Istituto Marangoni in London.  It all seems to say tailoring with an edge and definitely that Style Salvage would go mad for.

The highlight of the even for me though will be seeing Ivana K’s collection come to life.  How I have missed this Marangoni Milan graduate from my radar is most baffling seeing as she has been around for quite a few seasons, though it is in the last two that she has really impressed me.  To summarise, these are dresses that would convert even the most dress-shy girls.

Anyway, for all Londoners up for seeing this mixed showcase, the party kicks off at 7pm at The Dispensary Pub in Whitechapel (cocktails and canapes included!) and tickets are available for £35 (all proceeds going to Association Pas Seuls) at Hair and Jerome Salon or by calling 0207 357 0044.  Hopefully, will see some of you there!

Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael [Pretty by Nature]

I’m just sticking my head in for a minute to give you guys an awesome homemade foot scrub. My feet are embarrassingly dry and scaly around this time of the year. So I started experimenting and came up with this fantastic scrub to slough off some dead skin. Throw some raw almonds in the food processor until they are ground well but still a little chunky. Mix that with some Sweet Almond Oil until it reaches the desired consistency(think clumpy oatmeal). Massage it into your feet and wash off in the shower. Then pour yourself a glass of wine and relax. It will leave your feet feeling soft and smelling like an Almond Roca. Happy pampering!

Palm Oil Free [Pretty by Nature]

So today on Smartplanet there is an article about LUSH rolling out a new initiative. They plan to change the formula of their soaps to eliminate the use of palm oil. The first offering is their Greenwash Soap. As if we needed another reason to love LUSH.

I can’t wait to try it. Who am I kidding, I was just looking for an excuse to take another trip to LUSH. It’s a nice step and I do think it sends a message. It really is a double edged sword though. I mean palm oil in and of itself isn’t terrible but it’s the way most of it is produced is the problem. Wasn’t life so much easier before you had to worry about if your soap could cause cancer or not?

Please let me know if anyone has tried this soap yet, I can’t wait to check it out myself.

A Cute White Coat

Back in September, I was suddenly very determined to find a casual white coat to have fun with because I was bored of my other coats, which were all black. (Also I’m guessing it was a photo of Ashley Olsen in a white coat from around four years ago that triggered this sudden ‘want’. Kind of strange right?)

When it comes to shopping under time constraint, I do target-shopping. Which meant that I headed straight to Zara, where I know would have somewhat stylish, basic and very affordable coats. Zara didn’t let me down and I ended up buying this:
OK, so I have recently seen a LOT of girls in the streets here in London wearing basic coats from Zara, either exactly this one or similar ones. But since I get cold easily, I have already started wearing this in late September, so almost no one was wearing it yet. Oh, and I know the coat looks really not-pretty like that, but it looks really cool with the collar up and the top part wide open (the lapel part.)

Oops, rambling off my point. So the white coat did prove out to be really fun. It brightened up my casual outfits and I found it especially fun to wear it with dresses. Unfortunately, the white coat got dirty really easily. I stopped wearing it to lectures after only one lecture because my sitting around in random seats was just too much dirt for my coat to take.

My point is, while I wouldn’t spend a huge amount of money on a white coat, I think it’s worth trying out a white coat from affordable shops. Think of it as a youthful, cute thing to cheer you and your outfit up on those grey days!
