Glamour November 2007 - Mariah Carey

Sparkly!

And very, very Photoshoppy. You thought the Aniston cover was Photoshopped to death? I think this one beats it.

But the one thing that’s really missing from this cover is…a unicorn.

And maybe some of Mariah’s trademark butterflies.

What do you think?

Love Her Look: Eva Mendes

Eva Mendes is looking delightful in this snapshot and is wearing another one of my favorite looks: pink cheeks!

Pink blush gives a flirty, girly glow and always looks sweet.

To get Eva’s look, keep the cheeks the focus of the look by keeping the rest of the makeup light. Sweep a neutral matte brown shadow across the lids, then define the crease with a slightly darker neutral brown shadow. Apply a shimmery silvery white shadow along the lower lashline. Finish the eyes with a couple coats of defining mascara. Swirl blush on the apples of cheeks, diffusing it upward along the cheekbones. Then, slick on some sheer pink lipgloss, and you’re done!

Some of my favorite pink blushes include Cover Girl Cheekers Classic Pink, MAC Pinch O’Peach, Nars Mata Hari and Bare Escentuals Beauty.

The Far East Teen Stash

I must confess; whilst they were still in publication, I bought every issue of Ellegirl (both UK and US) editions and I still do succumb to Teen Vogue every month.  Flawed as Teen Vogue is with its excessive advertising, skewed portrayal of the young privileged American teenager and overly sacharrine/energetic posing (a lot of laughing and jumping), I also appreciate that the fashion aspirations it presents for its target audience is varied, in-depth and fun/cute in a way that most of the time doesn’t seem trite or forced.  For people who are way past their teen-dom like myself, I like to take something from that teen mag stash.  In fact the price-points of the designers they feature, if anything are more suited to people who have stable post-uni jobs really (I got confused when I first started buying this Americana teen stash when I was 17 and the whole mag was filled with Marc Jacobs and Luella wondering whether every American teenager was decked out in this stuff…).

When Elle Girl folded in both the US and the UK, I did think it was a shame especially since the UK now REALLY lacks a magazine that speaks truly to that 13-19yr old age group on a fashion level.  Yes, there were some really cringingly poor moments in the magazine but the present state of teen-mag barrenness is not preferrable I don’t think.  It may be that youngsters have turned their backs on print media and instead focus on the web (forums, blogs) but I’ve seen them squirrelling away their pocket money on Nylon and Teen Vogue (hence why they’re stocked at practically every newsagent in London and not just big bookstores) and I can’t help but lament the lack of a UK-based teen mag when it seems to me that teens here are SO energetic and enthusiastic when it comes to pursuing fashion.

Anyway, rant/rave over.  I’m heading over to New Malden (known as Korea Town in London) where I can hopefully find Vogue Girl Korea (which Fashion is Spinach loves so much…) and Elle Girl Korea, which both have impressively fashion forward editorials that are not alarmingly edgy but does push the boat out to healthily encourage a good ‘mix’ in one’s style.  My guilty pleasure teen stash just got a whole lot more expensive…

Kim Kardashian’s Baby Sisters Continue To Be Sexual, Age Inappropriate [Flashing With The Kardashians]

newVideoPlayer(”kardashians3_jezebel.flv”, 475, 376);
On last night’s Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kim, Khloe, Kourtney and momager Kris all headed down to Joe Francis’ multi-million dollar vacation home in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to shoot a print campaign for the new Girls Gone Wild “couture” swimsuit line–a personal request Francis made via phone from his jail cell. So while the family is away, half-brother Brody Jenner steps in to babysit the two little girls, Kylie, 9, and Kendall, 11. The girls begin to play “Girls Gone Wild,” by lifting up their shirts, screaming “Woo!” and then eventually making their way to the stripper pole in their parents’ room. Then Brody’s “manager” Frankie Delgado films them. It’s all really insane, considering that right now, Joe Francis is in major trouble for filming underage girls. Oh, then in the “coming up on the next episode” teaser, we get to see Kim being adamant about not wanting to remove her top for her Playboy shoot. As we’ve learned this week, she bared it all. And when we say “all” we mean her nips, lips, and cheeks.

All of the photos look real ’70s Playboy. Well, you know, with the exception of a lack of pubic hair.

Our New Favorite Website

So there are some occasions when a fruit basket will not do. We have standard gifts for some people in our lives; our former boss gets art books, our sister gets whatever she likes, our loved one usually gets some kind of bicycle parts, our mom gets a sweater, our dad a Philadelphia Eagles book. But what do you do for the other people you’re close to?

Well, we like to create. When we left our last job, we made a retirement themed mix CD (including "Career Opportunities" by The Clash, and "Gimme the Loot" by Notorious BIG), hand created, assembled, decorated and written thank you notes, and cookies. We will ignore that we lifted the paper from our then-boss (she got a long, long thank you on said paper - it wasn’t really a secret). We have a very important friend’s birthday coming up, and we were totally set to make him a small collection of our photography work - as he seems to like it.

Sadly, we had a large amount of darkroom difficulty and time constraints, we didn’t know what to do. He claimed to not want anything photographic/equipment, and his girlfriend- who already seems to dislike us - would probably not be too happy if we gave him a really nice cashmere sweater.

What to do? A mix CD would not be enough. Cookies - pshaw. Thankfully, by way of flickr, we found a site called blurb.

Three (or four) hours later, including two stiff knees, one glob of dog slobber, and two heart stopping minute when the program crashed, we have a completely awesome, 24 page hardbound photo book. We combined photos from our flickr account and his, and we’re so, so stoked to order this book. We think it may be the coolest gift we’ve ever given!

We were going to make a joke about how now we’ve published a book too, but it’s a LOT less cool when you do it yourself with templates on a website. But either way, we’re excited. And hey- we forgot to mention, it’s not that expensive. Our 24 page, hardbound book comes to around $25. If we like it when we get it, we’ll let everyone know - if anyone is interested, we can try to work out a discount with them.

Elizabeth Wurtzel, Hot Crazy Depressive Genius Writer Slut, Is Now 40 [Sigh]

A story in yesterday’s Times about gratuitously hot Prozac Nation author Elizabeth Wurtzel professed to be about how she’s in law school now, but obviously the big news is that she is forty. Forty. Which makes her not only old, but older than 90% of her classmates at law school, so instead of being the hot ex-rock critic crazy party girl of Yale Law ‘08, she’s sort of like that woman who grew up in a small town and had kids too young and then divorced her husband and raised them alone through some grueling 20-hour days while she worked three jobs and put herself through night school and made it through sheer triumph of the human spirit into Yale Law, only not inspiring. In other words, you know, she sorta looks forty, not that there’s anything wrong with that. Oh, and also, she will be working to protect intellectual property, at the catchily-named firm WilmerHale.

Because now that anyone with a shady doctor and a Livejournal account (or, ha ha, a job actually doing this for a living) can spew out uppers-addled rants weaving together Amy Fisher and Madonna and cutting and crying fits and her own sad, sad, sad life as an incredibly hot and intelligent young writer, it’s important we preserve the laws that seal her status as the very first? Because getting a 160 on her LSATs wasn’t good enough for the ACLU? I don’t know; suffice it to say this story was depressing, but in a kind of overall, non-specific way. That kind of feeling where you don’t know quite what’s wrong with all this, and that almost makes it worse, and then the whole thing becomes an unending spiral of “I hate myself because I hate my life and it’s so hateful that someone like me should hate her life because I have no real reason to hate anything about it which oh god just makes it so much WORSE…” Anyway, there are supposedly drugs for that.
