Evening Purge: Was It Arson? Also: Laura Bush Is Not In The Country

The fact that Laura Bush was in Abu Dhabi talking about breast cancer today was probably the 1023rd most important thing that happened today, but what a picture. The FBI is investigating the possibility that the wildfires at all caused by a band of suicide arsonists — ecoterrorists reenacting the post-Gulf War oil fires? is that the idea? — and Joe Francis’s new self-promotional website quotes Socrates saying “an unexamined life is not worth living,” and clearly all the people keeping this story on the most-viewed list of the largest newspaper serving Southern California for the third day going agree.

I don’t know how to tie any of this together before I leave the house ten minutes ago, but maybe you can help, and maybe I’ll post later. Hang in there, guys.

Four Glamorous Holiday Glosses

Seems that blinged out glosses are everywhere these days, and I’m loving this trend. Sure, you’ll pay a little more, but you’re getting a really fun conversation piece, whether as a gift or for yourself!

Four little treasures that I’m obsessing over this holiday season:

Dior DiorLight Holiday Bright Lip Gloss: This crystal bejeweled pendant is filled with a coppery-pink gloss. It looks SO much like “the galaxy on Orion’s belt” from Men In Black (remember? on the cat’s collar), but I think that makes me love it more. It looks…space age.

Lancome Precious Carat Lip Gloss: We’ve talked about this one before, but it’s definitely worth a second mention! A perfect gift, luxe stocking stuffer, or treat for yourself, this Swarovski crystal adorned lip gloss jewel is filled with a translucent, sparkly gloss.

BlingFusion Holiday LipFusion: Snap up my favorite lip plumper in limited edition Velvet, a soft, shimmery pink. The cap is glammed up with crystals! While this only costs $11 more than the original, maximize your investment when you finish the tube by cleaning the wand and using it with regular LipFusion tubes.

Yves Saint Laurent White Gold Lip Palette: This sweet, heart-shaped bauble is decorated with garnet Swarovski crystals and filled with a classic red lipstick and a sheer, shimmering gloss to top it off. There’s even an applicator hidden in the top ring! Rather than wear this around my neck (cheesy, methinks) I’d loop it around the handle of a purse.

Choose your Two Tones

I promise I will get off my rag about dancewear, catsuits, leotards, bodies and anything that involves a lot of toilet going difficulty.  However, I have been getting emails about the red and navy leotard I wore in Paris.  American Apparel obsessives will have spotted it out and it seems their two-toned-ness extends to tights as well as leotards.  I rather like the fact that AA once in a while comes up with these ‘ker-razy kat’ items (silver/gold lame leggings of yesteryear being a prime example) that keeps me coming back not because I’m there to stock up on the basic tee or two but to find something that will add a simple but striking dimension.  I’m not surprised they’re popping up stores all over the world…

I’m thinking a combo of the above with a brightly coloured top hat for a lazy Halloween?  There won’t be as much eyebrow raising going on if you just use Halloween as an excuse.

Reader Mail: An Excellent Question

We received this letter last night:

Dear LB,
I don’t mean to sound like a jerk or anything, but do you feel kind of weird talking about fashion all the time while California is on fire? I really don’t mean to sound bitchy - but how do you keep it light, if you will?
Gen
xx

Gen, we don’t blame you for asking. It sounds silly to say, but we feel that we need to continue to post to keep up any semblance of normalcy for our readers who may be affected by the fires. We, touch wood, have never experienced a natural disaster - so we don’t understand what our friends in the West are going through. We do know, however, that no one should have to see their homes and their lives burn to the ground (or get washed away, or lifted up into the air).

We would like to extend an offer to our readers who may be affected by this - if there is something we can do, please let us know. You can mail us here. We’re not sure what we can do, but we will do our best.

We will say that we know there are many, many more important and pressing things going on other than what we’re writing about. But one thing we have learned during tragedies is that keeping up or returning to normal activities can be a key part in helping and healing.

That’s been our experience, at least.

-LB

Techno Chic: A mobile program created by a Japanese video-game …

techno chic

A mobile program created by a Japanese video-game developer that allows women to ward off gropers has just become the seventh-most downloaded cellphone application. By pressing on an “anger icon” on the cellphone screen, women can flash the following messages at guys getting a little too close for comfort around: “Excuse me, did you just grope me?,” “Groping is a crime,” and “Shall we head to the police?”. An alarm goes off at increasing levels of volume with each succeeding message as well. Though the program was created to help subway-riding women specifically — the developer says the program is a must-have “for women who want to scare away perverts with minimum hassle and without attracting attention” — we think it would be particularly helpful at frat parties. And yoga class! [ABC News]

*It looks as if it is going to be a blustery day here for Day 2 of my Chicago shopping experience, but that’s not going to stop me. I’m just a steps away from everything from about a zillion different stores. Amazing doesn’t even come close to describing what I’m seeing outside my hotel window.  I will tell all later today. :)

Vivienne Tam Dresses

I am constantly amazed at my mom’s ability to be so up to date with the latest going ons in fashion. Her latest discovery are the trendy dresses at Vivienne Tam. Surprising isn’t it? I’ve always related her style as western with oriental influence and wouldn’t exactly call it trendy. So when my mom told me she’d bought me a dress from there, I was like, what?
Luckily for me, the dresses over at Vivienne Tam seems to have gone through a revival and are much trendier than I’d imagined. The dress my mom got me was this one, except mine is black and made of a woolish material. Now to be honest, when I first saw the dress (and identified it as this one in the catalog), I didn’t like it very much. It was past my knees and it has the most awkwardly positioned tie thing in the middle. That is not exactly the most flattering cut. But after playing around with it, I’ve tied it at the waist, such that a little puffy effect is created and is shorter, which is kind of cute with ankle boots!
This of course got me looking into the rest of the catalog and now I am lusting for more Vivienne Tam dresses! They have more simple casual (kind of shift) dresses. I especially love the grey one in the middle. The color is also so nice and wintery without being too black.

And check out those silver Mary Janes! I WANT a pair. They look so perfect in the winter with all these cute short dresses!
For something more sophisticated, there are these more polished creations. The dress on the right is my favourite! The bottom frills gives it just the right touch of girliness to the otherwise sophisticated and simple design.
Something a little more fun, there are these printed dresses. The rich silver brocade dress is so adorable! And as a side note, I really like that look on the far right (sorry about the bad scanning). Its so simple to achieve too. All I need is to go out and get myself a cute printed mini!

Who would’ve thought that these creations were Vivienne Tam?
