Sale of the Day: True Religion Megans

We’re always a little baffled by “nice”—cuffed, etc.—jeans. It’s like, What are you? Are you fun? Or are you for work? Because you can’t have it both ways. Except you sort of can. We will say this: We had our first editorial meeting in like three years this week, and we got in trouble for too much “snickering.” So we are, clearly, the last one out there to talk about work wear. We’re just trying to figure out (a) if there’s something just intrinsically weird about cuffed, fancy jeans, or (b) we would wear these anywhere but an office. Like the movies, say, or the mall. We’re undecided. But if we were going to wear cuffed jeans, these would be they.

True Religion Megans, were $195, now $127

Oprah Gains Weight From Thyroid [Burning The Scale]

Oprah recently announced on her talk show that she had been feeling tired and sluggish as a result of an underactive thyroid (she had also gained 20 pounds). Apparently she used to have hyperthyroidism, a condition where your metabolism, heart rate etc are extremely high, and then she “blew out” her thyroid and had the opposite problem.

This surprised me, because we know Oprah has had a history of yo-yo dieting and bingeing that has been responsible for her weight gain in the past. One incident in particular comes to mind, where Oprah had reportedly binged on 2-year-old frozen hot dog buns and maple syrup for “comfort food” (NY Times)

She mentioned on her show that one in four perimenopausal or menopausal woman will end up having an issue with their thyroid. Symptoms include feeling tired and sluggish, sleeping an excessive amount, inability to lose weight or weight gain and feeling cold.

If you suspect something is wrong with your thyroid, be sure to go to the doctor and have a blood test done. It’s worth noting that the same symptoms could be the result of an iron deficiency, which is much easier and cheaper to treat. Either way, it’s always good to know what’s going on with your body.

Whistles: Given the Lula Touch

It’s interesting how a magazine can carve out such a distinctive aesthetic that a brand would covet and be inspired by that magazine enough to give themselves a make-over.  That’s exactly what has happened with Lula and the British mid-range label Whistles.  I was wondering a while back what a Whistles advert was doing in the new issue of Lula but thought it was only because of Valentine Fillol Cordier’s (unofficial Lula mascot) appearance in the ad.  Turns out the Lula crew - Leith Clark and Becky Smith shot the whole campaign for Whistles AW07-8.  Predictably it has all those Lula-editorial traits - the dreamy sunshine-infused haziness, the coquettish looks/poses, the childish playfulness.

It’s not just the campaign for this season though.  The whole Whistles website has undergone a make-over.  I’m pretty sure Lula wasn’t responsible directly for the design but the inspiration to create a cosy/girly boudoir atmosphere must have stemmed from Lula somehow.  Cats, dogs, old-fashioned picture frames, vintage magazine prints, shoes and antique telephones are littered around the website.  Leith Clark would surely approve of having the magazine associated with a brand that has reinvented itself thus.

I think it’s a smart move on Whistles’ part to create a nichey sort of look and that they didn’t go down the cringey path of attempting something edgy.  By keeping in the comfort zone of their clothes which are fashion conscious as opposed to trend-chasing, and creating a website that has a bit of generic prettiness appeal, Whistles will probably get more people to reassess the brand.  I’m probably a complete sucker but the pretty-pretty website got me looking closer at the clothes and searching out a little bit harder…

Of course, I didn’t find anything to write home about (given my gripe is still with the inflated prices!) but somewhere down that untapped customer source, SOMEONE will be hooked in.  I am impressed they have also sell other French and Swedish brands like Antik Batik, Diabless and Odd Molly on the website alongside their own clothes.  I suppose it’s them associating themselves with a certain kind of French-chic that can only help them along the way.

I wonder who else could do with some Lula-brandification?

Hollywood Stylish Man : Jake Gyllenhaal [She Knows Best - Lifestyle Tips for Guys]

Jake Gyllenhaal along with the cast and “rumored” girlfriend Reese Witherspoon was in 2nd Rome’s Film Festival, Rome Italy this weekend to promote their new movie, “Rendition“. Here’s how Jake dressed up for the glamorous event :

I’ve always seen Jake in black suits so this grey with 1 button wide lapel suit, lavander/purple(?) tie and black shoes is such a refreshing change in my opinion. And of course the “scruffy” face look that some hollywood men are sporting these days. Anyhooo, if I didn’t know any better, I would say the color of his necktie matched the color of Reese Witherspoon’s beautiful dress ;) . *Ahem*

Sister Act: Is Nicky Hilton The Anti-Paris?

Adam Tschorn of the L.A. Times hung out backstage with Nicky Hilton before her Chick line made its Los Angeles Fashion Week debut. You’d think this would make for an exciting story, since Tschorn was privy to all sorts of insights from Ms. Hilton, such as: “We’re going for a look that’s like a living doll — eyelashes, red lips, rosy cheeks. All the girls in the show are young; I don’t think there is even one that’s over 20.” Unfortunately, the article — and maybe Nicky herself? — lacks any notable or interesting highlights. Newsflash! Nicky wanted “fun songs” for her runway show. “I hate it when designers use all this heavy, obscure instrumental stuff that no one understands,” she said. “I’ve been to at least a hundred shows and it’s boring to sit there and listen to that for 20 minutes.” Her choices? Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely” and the Verve’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony.” Uh, scintillating.

When a TV reporter asked, “If Sleeping Beauty were alive today, where in L.A. would she live? Where would she party? Who is your Prince Charming?” Nicky looked “slightly annoyed.” But no snappish remarks issued from her lips. And she was detail-oriented! She had a shopping bag full Manolos and Louboutins, which she passed out to the models. “We were running low, so I brought some of my own shoes,” she explained. Snooze! Then, OMG, the letter K in her logo “Chick” fell off of the runway mere moments before the show! But someone tacked it back into place. After the models walked and posed, Nicky received a standing ovation and roses from her boyfriend, David Katzenberg. No drama, no crazy quotes, no snuggling of thimble-sized dogs. (Paris was in Toronto, filming a movie.) One would almost think that Nicky is trying to differentiate herself from her sister. And everything about her poise, composure and subdued nature just scream, “I am not Paris”, like it or not, her sister is definitely more fun to read about.

Hair Apparent: Lucia Moses of MediaWeek had a “60 second …

hair apparent

Lucia Moses of MediaWeek had a “60 second interview” with Cindi Leive, editor-in-chief of Glamour. Ms. Leive talked about hiring and training staff as magazines become multiplatform brands; product placement versus regular advertising pages; and the 2007 Glamour Woman of The Year Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Toni Morrison. Ms. Leive says Ms. Morrison is a “personal hero” of hers. “I remember reading The Bluest Eye in high school and being totally blown away by it. I’ve been trying to get her for the past six or seven years and her schedule was finally cleared,” she says. Interesting choice, since a Glamour editor recently pronounced dreadlocks as inappropriate! [MediaWeek]

Passionate About the Earth? Then Here’s a Great Opportunity for You. [Teen Style Lounge]

Okay, so this isn’t mainstream Beauty or Style news, but as you well know, everything we do affects our Earth’s beauty and everything that happens to it directly or indirectly affects us…and our beauty and style. So that’s why I wanted to share this very cool new opportunity from my beloved Weather Channel (Yes, I am a huge weather junkie) with you:

“The Forecast Earth Summit. This three-day event will focus on environmental educational campaigns and will afford 20 students the opportunity to engage in-depth with numerous environmental leaders, enthusiasts and scientists, including Dr. Heidi Cullen, The Weather Channel’s expert climatologist.

The Forecast Earth Summit is geared to high school freshman, sophomore and junior students. Entry submission requirements are contact information, photo, and a 200-word essay explaining why the environment is their passion and outlining what personal efforts have been employed to make the planet “clean and green.” Beginning October 16, interested students can submit entries online at www.forecastearthsummit.org. The deadline for entry is November 11th.”

Sound cool? I thought so, too. Just do me a favor, though. If you do enter this, could you drop me a line to let me know? You can either leave a comment on this post, or you can send me an email by clicking on my name to the right. I’d love to hear your story.

Also, if you’d like to know more and have some questions, give me a holler and I’ll try to get an interview with a Summit expert. :)

Good luck on your entry and keep showin’ the Earth some luv.
