Reader Question: Boots, Redux

Today we have a letter from Kristin:

I bought cute boots, but my feet are huge so they are not as cute as they should be, what’s a bigfooted girl to do?

Kristin

Now, we must shake our finger at Kristin. Why in the world would your feet be too big for a pair of boots? Unless they don’t fit - in which case take them back! But as far as appearances - all we can say is if a certain blond rich girl - who has a size 11 foot - can rock whatever shoes she wants, so can everyone else.

We will say that if you’re concerned about how big your foot looks - we must interject. We worked in shoe stores for ages, and we’re quite good at guessing shoe sizes. It’s a weird talent of ours. We have never looked at anyone’s feet and thought how large they looked in their shoes. Anyway. If you’re concerned with that, we would steer you away from white, and towards heels. We know heels are not always comfortable, but they’ll keep your foot from looking like its soldered onto the end of your leg, which is how we always feel in flat boots. We don’t think color makes much of a difference, and we will always opt for leather over suede (or, if you are veg, smooth over textured vinyl/plastic). We’d also suggest a solid color, just to keep the eye moving. We would never chastise someone for their feelings, but we would never want to see someone stay away from something they like because they think it won’t look right. Take a chance, we say! Be daring!

We once had a pair of black, Czech tapestry boots that we got as a gift from a friend of ours who was a shoe buyer for one of our favorite stores. We had no idea what to wear them with. We didn’t care. We paired them with jeans, and a black t-shirt. We probably looked ridiculous - in fact, we think our old boss said as much - but  we loved those boots and we didn’t care. And that self-confidence kept us wearing those boots until they fell apart. And because we were so confident, people who may have thought we looked odd complimented us instead.

Enough lecture. Here are our picks for you:

Above, Michael Kors Brink boots, $398.95

We don’t love these Gabriella Rocha boots. We like them. But that’s how we feel about most classic things; they’re simple, they’re understated, they’ll look great on. They are like the long-standing relationship rather than the one night stand.

Fey boots, $125.96

These boots from Delias are pretty sweet. And, they’re $15. We have socks that cost as much. We don’t know about their quality, but we like everything else about them.

Sedgwick boots, $14.99

We will say that we would strongly encourage Kristin to try on boots of all sizes and styles and shapes - and to take an objective, honest friend with her. Your own feet often look biggest to you because they’re in proportion to like, the floor. They’re never as big as you think.

Callin’ all High Street Honeyz out der!

Having started the blog in a not so great financial position and with the aim of showing that fashion does not necessarily mean massive expenditure, I am slightly ashamed that as I am now in a more comfortable financial situation, and the ratio of vintage/designer/indie/boutique buys to high street is now weighted more towards the former than the latter.  It’s not that I’m necessarily buying more expensive things as I’m still a jumble sale/charity shop junkie.  But rather, I’m slowly and surely withdrawing from the high street in favour for things elsewhere because I can afford to do so when living in London and travelling.  Admiration for high street honeyz (a derogatory UK FHM phrase….but comically applicable here…) continues though.  For instance, I’m amazed at how people like Agathe can find gems from H&M and dress head to toe in it without looking like a shop dummy.

Still, the high street honey in me does emerge at times there are still benefits to be had.  The things in my wardrobe that have recently been getting the most attention and questions are things under £35 quid.  I realise vocal compliments from other people isn’t necessarily complete validation for your purchases but naturally they do give you a bit of a boost when you’re out and about.

First up, there’s this black tote from Topshop which I bought in a haste to use for days when I have to lug around the whole shebang (laptop, camera, notebooks, mags, tripod…. all blogging essentials) and I don’t want to look like a bag lady so I’ll let the one bag overtake me instead.  It then funnily emmerged that the black patent triangles on the bag was a homage to the AW07-8 Gareth Pugh leather triangled trousers which have just arrived at Browns (it was a little odd when I stood next to the Gareth Pugh dummy in Colette and it looked like I was there to pay my respects to the Pugh-meister…).  Still, people can’t seem to believe it’s Topshop (I don’t think the bag went online…) and have been giving it their approving nods all round - I can’t work out whether it’s the size (people apparently still like trumping each other with their bag size…) or the patent triangles…

Then there are these Irregular Choice shoes that were on sale and I had a discount code.  It was a bit of a pleasant surprise that they arrived with this slightly curved block heel as I foolishly didn’t spot this.  I have on occasion scratched my head a little at IR shoe designs and declared some of them ‘odd for the sake of being odd’.  But these chunky heeled cut-out brogue-esque black textured, speckled leather shoes (excuse the long description) are surprisingly all-purpose.  Yet at the same time, there’s something about them that seems to get people complimenting.

High Street Honey I’m not, but it’s good to know that at a time when it seems fast, affordable fashion is reaching saturation point (at least for me…), that gems still exist and I’ll hold my hands up and say that the high street purchases aren’t halting anytime soon.

Reader Mail: The Halloween

Today we summarize a batch of mail we have recently received, with this one, which most closely encapsulates the general vibe:

Dear Bunnyshop:

Halloween is just around the corner. I want to dress up, but I’m always freaked out by how everyone else at the parties is Slutty Nurse, Slutty Cowgirl, whatever. What can I do? I’m not even sure I want to go out at this point.

Love,
A.

Oh, Halloween. We mean, really. We remember being in elementary school and dressing up as a “Dutch girl” (which we were, in fact, sort of) with the clogs and the peaked hat. And then maybe we’d be a hobo or a witch or whatever. We don’t remember what happened in between elementary school and college, but something definitely had, because suddenly everyone was dressing like [Fill In Occuption] Slut. Or Slutty [Fill In Occupation. Slutty nurse, slutty secretary, slutty schoolteacher, etc. Here is a list from Extreme Halloween:

Sexy Dorothy
Glitter Mermaid
Vixen Pirate Wench
Mile High Captain Uniform
Pretty Plumber Costume
Wizard Wanda
Teacher’s Pet Sexy School Girl
French Maid
Bettie Page
Sexy Saucy Marie Playboy Costume

We. Are. Just. Not doing this. We are boycotting. We will say: We have lived almost exclusively in cities with traditions of taking Halloween very seriously, and every once in a while—we saw a couple of these last year and were very pro, and were all, “Hmm, wish we could think of something that clever.” But we can’t. Unless we thought about it very, very hard. We’re sure for some people, clever Halloween costumes come very naturally. For us, they do not, and we need that section of brain to figure out, say, how to … knife? carve up? dice? an onion. (Because obviously we haven’t entirely wrapped our head around it yet.) We will be somewhere between Austin, TX, and Denver, CO, for Halloween this year, and we are planning on spending it in a Motel 6 room somewhere (glam! not! but actually, we love Motel 6! as long as there are no meth addicts there! like that one time! at least we think it was meth!) watching Comedy Central or reading Suze Orman books or, we don’t know, falling asleep.

Our position, in short: Fourth of July. Love it. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Labor Day. Pro. The thing about holidays is, we don’t need to participate in all of them. Hate to be the grinch here, but for us: Halloween: pass.

Anybody else have a position?

Zipped and bound

I’m afraid that in patent leather, this Charlotte Vasberg Tote would be just a bit over the line of S&M gear, but in supple leather, it’s more rock and roll than hardcore.
Braces galore weave in and out of oblong grommets, binding the bag up in an interesting fashion. Brass zippers along the top and bottom add additional storage, and the one on the bottom is big enough to stow a pair of flats. Inside is plenty of room for larger things. The bag has a briefcase like top handle, but also a longer belted shoulder strap for cross body carrying. Nice if you load it up, like I know I would. This is certainly an unusual handbag for anyone who doesn’t want to be caught with the same Chloe tote everyone else is carrying…and it’s from a great Brooklyn indie store loved by fashionistas and editors in the know. The Charlotte Vasberg medium shopper is $875 Bird
