Reader Question: Wedding Dresses!

We must admit, answering a question about wedding dresses makes us nervous. It’s such an incredibly personal thing, and we’ve realized that generally speaking, it’s hard to recommend something to someone because they just don’t listen. Either way - here is our reader question:

I’m not sure if this is something you can answer, but I need some wedding dress advice.  I’m getting married next year and have no idea what kind of dress to get.  I’m short (5"2) and average sized (120lbs) so I don’t want anything that overwhelms my frame.  Any suggestions on a simple style that wouldn’t make me look like I’m playing dress up? Should I go with floor length or shorter?  Spaghetti straps or halter? Oh, and since we’re paying for the wedding ourselves, the cheaper the better.  Thanks!  =)

A lot of what you wear depends on what time of year your wedding is. We love tea-length or knee length dresses, but if you’re getting married in January, that could be quite a challenge. The strap part can often depend on the bust size, too. Since we’re rather boyish in shape, and we got married in the summer, and we’re cheap, we wore a really simple J. Crew cotton party dress that was knee-length and spaghetti-strapped. We also must advocate the use of party dresses as wedding dresses - unless you want something very wedding-y (which is totally awesome, don’t get us wrong). If you want something simple, though, check out department stores come prom and formal seasons.

Our favorite is the Sophia dress from J.Crew. It comes in petite so it’ll be scaled for a smaller stature. We love the nipped-in waist, the top is pretty but could be worn in any season, and we are really into the slim lines. Plus, it’s on sale! We love sales!

We love the kind of Hollywood look to this - but it might be too much fabric for a petite frame. But we think it’s worth a shot.

We know, we know. A minidress does not make a wedding dress. But this could be the right dress for someone - we love it.

There is something so lovely and so simple about this dress. We actually just capitalized the d, as if it were a proper noun. We think this style looks great on everyone, works all year round, and it’s under a hundred bucks. We will note that it seems a bit long, but for $88, you can probably swing some alterations if necessary. Excellent.
