She’s Lost Control….over some jeans

Rollergirl was excited about it.  Style Salvage was excited about it.  Anybody worth their music salt was excited about it.  Yup, the film, Control came out and I only just saw it a few days ago.  Just in case you haven’t had the promos thrusted upon you (it could just be a London thing…), Control is the biopic film about Joy Division’s lead singer Ian Curtis who committed suicide at the tender age of 23.  The film is based on the book ‘Touching from a Distance’ by Deborah Curtis, widow of Ian.

The film is Anton Corbijn, a music video director who has taken his experience and added a very purposeful stylistic approach to the film.  It’s filmed in very stark monochrome and yes the cinematography is as stunning as they say.  However I’m still a little unsure whether the details of Curtis’ life, the involvement of the other members of other Joy Division and the finer emotional details were glossed over a little in favour of style.  Sam Riley and Samantha Morton do stellar jobs of playing Ian and Deborah Curtis and the band’s own performances of the songs must be commended as other music biopics seem to be in favour of using dubbing…. (*ahem* La Vie en Rose…)

The fashion point of this post though is a tribute to Ian Curtis’ personal style that Style Salvage noted a while back.  More to the finer point, both the boyf and I have been trying to figure out the material/structure of these jeans that Ian Curtis wore at a very early gig when the band was still called Warsaw in 1977.  Questions ensued…

Are they leather trousers?  That would have been my first guess as the time period would suggest so, but then upon closer inspection, they also look to be waxed denim (much like those Dior Homme sheeny jeans I so wanted…).  Did shiny waxed denim even exist back in 1977?  In the film, they used leather trousers to hint at this particular outfit but looking at this image, I’m not convinced…

Either way, leather or denim, they looked superb as worn by Curtis and it seems all pants shiny are making headwaves at Topshop so the quest for the exaggerated shiny pant (those black sequin ones that ppl have pointed out to me aren’t exactly the ones I wanted but thanks for the tip-offs anyway…) continues.

I’ll leave you with one of my fave Joy Division songs: She’s Lost Control (which is incidentally the inspiration behind Maaike Mekking’s AW07-8 collection which I talked up a while back…).

Studies: Coathangers Be Damned! 90% Of World’s Women Hellbent On Having Abortions, No Matter What The Law!

A new World Health Organization study on abortion is out, and all the news outlets are interpreting it differently! Over at FOX, the big news is the study’s estimate that one in five pregnancies ends in abortion and 90% of women will have an abortion before the age of 45. Meanwhile at the New York Times, the take is that outlawing abortion will not reduce the number of abortions. “”What we see is that the law does not influence a woman’s decision to have an abortion,” says Dr. Paul Va Look of WHO. “If there’s an unplanned pregnancy, it does not matter if the law is restrictive or liberal.” Now, I am all for keeping abortion VERY VERY LEGAL, but all this shit strikes me as a little crazytown, because I know for a fact that there is a big fucking difference between taking two pills and sticking a rusty hanger up my cervix, and one of those differences is that I live in a society wherein I would not only not be exiled by my peers for having an unplanned baby out of wedlock but I could probably figure out a way to feed it. (Memo to Fate: do NOT read into that!) And about that 90% thing…

Are we still manipulating statistics like this? Didn’t we learn our lesson with the $37,000 wedding? Isn’t the number of women who reach 45 without ever managing to get pregnant in the first place close to 10% of the population? Anyway, the real point of the story, over at the website of the journal The Lancet, is that almost half of all the abortions that happen every year are considered to be “unsafe” and potentially deadly, and almost all of those occur in countries too poor not to cling to monotheistic religions for comfort and consolation, but as usual with religion, the result of all that is a lot of discomfort (and also death) disproportionately suffered by women. Think that if the media focused on such case studies, as opposed to blue and red-color colded talking points, it could convince the nation’s religious zealots to direct their anti-abortion righteousness toward, you know, helping people or something? Ha ha ha, me either.

Smells Like Mean Spirit: Would You Buy Madonna’s Perfume?

Celebrity fragrances made $353.6 million in sales last year, but one major star didn’t get a slice of that pie: Madonna. She’s just about to ink a $120 million deal with Live Nation, and they’ll have the right to license the singer’s name for all kinds of merchandising projects, including fragrance, reports WWD. Apparently, Madonna has shopped herself around the fragrance industry for more than a decade. But this could be the right time, and the right deal. And industry insiders say that If Madonna does associate herself with a scent, it could be huge. “A Madonna scent would make sense,” said Art Spiro, president of Liz Claiborne Cosmetics (which just released the Usher fragrance). “She is an internationally known celebrity who has appeal to a wide cross-section of demographic and cultural markets. It could be an interesting opportunity for someone.”

Betsy Olum, senior vice president of marketing at Sephora, says, “She is such an inspiration, and I would inevitably buy her fragrance — however, it would really need a revolutionary new angle to it. If anyone can do this, she can. Madonna is the master of reinvention. The fragrance could help the celebrity fragrance industry in that respect.”

On the other hand, Madonna is not known for being easy to work with. Patrick Bousquet-Chavanne, a group president of the Estée Lauder Cos. Inc., warns that licensing deals “take a meeting of minds and she is probably more demanding than most.” Also, do people care about Madonna the way they once did? “She has most of her career behind her,” Bousquet-Chavanne notes, but “she has a universality to her and a timelessness.”

Plus, the celebrity fragrance market may be oversaturated… and fatigued. And Madonna is not exactly red-hot at the moment. Neil Katz, CEO of Parlux Fragrances, which markets the Paris Hilton scent, says, “Years ago, she could sell fragrance. But I don’t know if at this point in her career, she still has that strong a following. I don’t know.” Madonna’s music has been around for 25 years and she is known in countries around the world — is having her own fragrance on the market even something she needs to do? And even if she had the best concept, amazing packaging, stunning, avant-garde ad campaigns and a truly seductive, wonderful scent, would it just seem like the once-innovator was late to the game?
